Any guess on what the midrange horn on the Alura is or on the Vittora?

I thought the midrange compression driver was the pricey BMS 4592ND:

That is a really nice crossover!

I’m a little surprised they used cement resistors for the level setting. Also, that’s a complicated network, is it just LP and HP or does it include a mid?

I am waiting for a couple BMS 4591C, have BMS 4547ND with an 18sound XT1086 Horn. probably will order a Fc260 horn to change a 50 cm round tractrix

Do youknow wich crossover point Alura has in between 15″ and horn??

I have a DIY double 12″ Beyma 12G40 bass reflex and would like to cross at lowest point possible, around 300 Hz, since i found that (with BMS 4590) is better not allow the woofers to go higher. your experiences/opinion is greatly appreciated

both are the same. a 260hz cf edgar tractrix horn. I think they sell it 300USD/pr. mail them and ask: info [at] logicaudio.ir

I have a pair of Faital Pro hf108r with sh100 horns and a pair of Faital Pro 15pr400 woofers and am looking at building something similar to the Volti Audio Alura or Rival. Has anyone heard both designs and can describe the pros/cons of each?

Which 2″ midrange phenolic diaphragm driver would the volti audio speaker likely to be using? Is there plans to build the FC260 horn available somewhere?

What passive crossover design would work best with this sort of 3-way combo?

— Hi Tuyen, As far as the midrange driver it’s listed here — just read through the 3 pages.

— There aren’t any plans out there for the FC260 Horn that Gregg at Volti Audio is using because it’s proprietary. but it’s basically an Edgar Tractrix Horn you can go to this website Volvetretor — ( see links below ) — and get the PDF of the » Edgar Midrange horn » — which has the basic Tractrix Horn design information.

— Then if you click on the next link below it is a simple program that will calculate the shape and dimensions of the Midrange horn you need so you can build it. you will need to decide what the cut off frequency you want for the Midrange Horn. you can Find the cut off frequency for the FC260 and use that if that’s what you want to use.

— It’s also VERY IMPORTANT that you make as smooth translation from the round BMS 4592ND — Midrange driver to the square shape where you attach the Midrange driver to on the Horn — it’s called the Horn’s throat. Use some wood putty or Bondo putty to make as Smooth transition as you can from the round to square shape.

— you should also goggle all the Reviews you can find for Volti Horn speakers and read them carefully to learn more about the design concept. Gregg’ horns sound AMAZING, so if you can come close it will be more than worth the effort to learn as much as you can.

— There aren’t any plans for the crossover , but if you spend a few days reading up on crossovers, then come ask for help here you will get some good feedback about the best way to learn how to design it.
— You could by an inexpensive Active crossover like a miniDSP or Behringer to try different kinds of crossovers to find with you think sounds and measures the best, then after you find the kind of crossover you like — first order, second order, or third order. and what crossover frequency you want, then build an passive crossover to match it. ask for help if you don’t understand something. And READ up on other diy horns that have been built by other people here at diyaudio , you can learn a lot.

so i been looking at these speakers for awhile. never heard them. very interesting to me, a little too big but they are gorgeous.
anyone have any experience??

With incredible dynamic range, accuracy, and correct tonal balance, the Alura reproduces the sound of instruments as though they were being played live in your listening room. Few speakers can match the combination of sensitivity (99db), power handling (200 watts continuous), and smooth, wide frequency response (down to 35Hz) of the Alura. With a front port and controlled directivity drivers, the Alura works well in virtually any size or type of room. Even in challenging setups, the Alura produces a large soundstage and pinpoint imaging; that along with its power and dynamic range, makes for an effortless and musical presentation like no other.

The Alura A15/MT1 is a two-piece cabinet. In the lower cabinet there is a high-sensitivity 15″ woofer in a bass reflex configuration, and in the top cabinet, a midrange horn, tweeter horn, and crossover network.

The large wooden midrange horn utilizes a tractrix flare, and is designed and built in-house. It has a 2″ throat and and is driven by a large-format midrange compression driver with a 3-1/2″ voice coil. This combination of large, solidly built wooden horn with a large throat and huge midrange compression driver results in a midrange sound that smooth and articulate, dynamic and uncolored. The midrange is truly the heart of this loudspeaker, and the listener is rewarded with a musicality from this midrange horn that is very rare in this industry, at any price.

The tweeter, located above the mid horn at the top of the cabinet, combines a 1″ compression driver feeding through an elliptical tractrix horn. With a carefully tuned crossover filter, it delivers extended, smooth high frequencies that compliment the rest of this system.

About Volti Audio

I started Volti Audio back in 2009, building upgrade parts for Klipsch Khorn speakers – still a part of my business today. “Fixing” my own Khorns led me into this business, and the parts that I developed for my Khorns led me into my first complete speaker design, the Vittora. The Vittora has been a success beyond what I ever expected, and I am very grateful for all of those people, past and present who provided me with the knowledge and information I needed to develop such a great product.

From the outside looking in, it looks like Greg Roberts is a one-man-show. But that is simply not the case. My wife Laurie (married to her since 1982, I think I’ll hold on to her) is an integral part of Volti Audio, with a never-ending list of “Laurie Jobs”. There have been dozens of people over the years who have provided everything from engineering work to helpful advice – and how could I ever have done everything I’ve done without them? Where would I be without my mentor Gary Dews? Probably not in business! I cannot overlook the contributions made by one of the Giants of our industry, Mr. Paul W. Klipsch, a person I never met, but who has influenced me greatly. When it comes right down to it though, no person is more important to the success of Volti Audio than each customer I build speakers for. My customers are the lifeblood of my company, and what would be the point of anything I do if not for them?

Volti Audio is a small company. I do all the design, nearly all the manufacturing, nearly all the marketing, and all the sales. I build 10’s of speakers a year, not hundreds or thousands. Even though Volti could easily become a company producing hundreds of speakers a year, in a factory with 40 employees, it’s not going to happen under my watch. I’m at a point in my life where I like not knowing what time I got up this morning, because it doesn’t matter. And if I choose to walk out into my shop at midnight and make sawdust, that’s what I’ll do. I like working. I don’t like managing other people. I know I won’t make a lot of money running my business this way, but I’m happy, and that counts for a lot more I think. Some of you older guys reading this are nodding your heads in agreement.

Yes, I’m passionate about what I do. I love my work. I would do this work even if I wasn’t paid for it! I like the marketing – the website work and the shows. I like designing speakers, even though it can be frustrating at times. I like making things with my hands. I like creating and making beautifully built things. I like customer relations – helping my customers enjoy the excitement of music in the same way that I do. I’m very fortunate that I’m at this place in my life where I’m able to do something I love and make a living doing it.

So there you go. Now you know a little more about the person you’ll be buying speakers from.
